How Does RM43 Weed Killer Work?

RM43 Total Vegetation Control’s active ingredients are Glyphosate and Imazapyr. Glyphosate and Imazapyr are both non-selective herbicides that will kill most leaves and plants. They work together to prevent plants from making certain proteins that are needed for plant growth. Glyphosate stops the shikimic acid pathway, and Imazapyr disrupts protein synthesis to interfere with cell growth and DNA synthesis.

You’ll want to use protective equipment before applying, such as gloves, protective glasses, and long sleeve clothing when handling RM43 concentrate. Refer to the product label for specific safety instructions.

Weed Killer Warning! Always read the manufacturer’s recommendations when choosing and applying any chemical herbicides to your lawn or landscape beds. Wear protective gloves and remember that some weed killer applications can kill flowers, grasses, and shrubs.

What is in RM43 Total Vegetation Control?

RM43 concentrate’s active ingredients are Glyphosate and Imazapyr. Both of these non-selective herbicides work together to kill most leaves and plants for “total vegetation control”

rm43 total vegetation control kills weed fast
RM43 Total Vegetation Control is a fast-acting herbicide.

Glyphosate works by preventing plants from making certain proteins that are needed for plant growth. Glyphosate stops the shikimic acid pathway, a specific enzyme pathway necessary for plants, and some microorganisms to grow.

Glyphosate was first registered for use in the U.S. in 1974. Glyphosate is one of the most widely used herbicides in the United States. People apply it in agriculture and forestry, on lawns and gardens, and for weeds in industrial areas. Some products containing glyphosate control aquatic plants.

Imazapyr is absorbed by the leaves and roots of the plant and moves rapidly through it and eventually accumulates in the active growth region of the plant. In plants, imazapyr disrupts protein synthesis and interferes with cell growth and DNA synthesis.

Imazapyr is an ingredient of several commercial weed killing products such as Ortho Ground Clear. A related herbicide, Imazapic is an ingredient in Roundup Extended Control. Both chemicals are non-selective, long-lasting, and effective in weed control. They are, however, water-soluble, and depending on soil type and moisture they can move into parts of the landscape where they weren’t sprayed. It’s important to note that some desirable landscape plants are especially sensitive to these herbicides and can be damaged.

Is RM43 Concentrate Weed Killer a Selective Herbicide?

No, RM43 concentrate is not a selective herbicide, it will kill most vegetation so keep it way from desirable flowers, grasses, and trees.

If you are seeking a selective herbicide for your lawn, consider Tenacity Weed Killer or Certainty Herbicide so you don’t kill everything the product comes in contact with.

Is RM43 Total Vegetation Control a Pre or Post-Emergent Herbicide?

RM43 Total Vegetation Control concentrate is both a pre and post-emergent herbicide. The product offers you the best of both worlds; control of weeds before they emerge from the soil’s surface and after they’ve sprouted above the soil. RM43 is an excellent herbicide option for homeowners looking for flat-out vegetation control of numerous plants, including chickweed, clover, crabgrass, dandelion, foxtail, henbit, nutsedge, and more.

Who Manufactures RM43 Total Vegetation Control?

RM43 is manufactured by Ragan & Massey, a company at the forefront of the forage seed and agricultural chemical industries. The company was founded in 1991 and has grown to produce 34 products under 12 proprietary brands that are available in over 3,500 stores nationwide. The founders, Tom Ragan and Mike Massey lead the company from their headquarters in Ponchatoula, Louisiana.

Why is RM43 Total Vegetation Control So Popular for Homeowners and Gardeners?

There are several reasons why RM43 Total Vegetation Control is widely used among homeowners, farmers, and gardeners. For starters, RM43 is a non-selective, systemic herbicide that’s capable of providing pre and post-emergence vegetation control of grass and broadleaf weeds.

The effects of applying RM43 Total Vegetation Control also manifest relatively fast. Once absorbed, RM43 quickly travels throughout the whole plant, and the growth of the target weed is suppressed soon after contact by inhibiting essential amino acids necessary for growth. Backpack sprayers, pump-up pressure sprayers, and other, similar types of hand-held sprayers may be used to apply this product.

Is RM43 Total Vegetation Control a Glyphosate Herbicide?

Yes, RM43 contains Glyphosate herbicide.

Glyphosate is an organophosphorus herbicide that prevents the plant from making specific proteins that play a vital role in plant growth. Glyphosate disrupts the pathway of a particular enzyme in the shikimic acid pathway, which is essential for the life of plants and some microorganisms.

RM43 also contains Imazapyr an herbicide that is absorbed by the leaves and roots of the plant and moves rapidly through it and eventually accumulates in the active growth region of the plant. In plants, imazapyr disrupts protein synthesis and interferes with cell growth and DNA synthesis.

How Do I Mix RM43?

RM43 recommends specific PPE for anyone handling the product. Please note, it’s extremely important to read the label carefully. Below are the specific instructions directly from the label.

rm43 total vegetation control used in a large area
RM43 Total Vegetation Control is great for killing weeds in large areas

Apply on a sunny day with temperatures above 60°F. Avoid product runoff to nearby desirable plants. In soils with heavy clay, weed control may exceed one year.

For Total Vegetation Control (Bareground)

  • Use hand-operated spray equipment such as backpack sprayers, pump-up sprayers or sprinkling cans, or ATV/Tractor mounted sprayers.
  • Mix 7.4 fl. oz. (0.46 pints) of this product with water to produce 1 to 10 gallons of spray solution.
  • Optimum performance will be achieved from applications to actively growing weeds in early summer.
  • Uniformly spray the mix over the area where total vegetation control and bare ground is desired. 7.4 fl. oz. of the product within 1 to 10 gallons of spray solution should be applied to 1,000 square feet.
  • This product’s maximum application rate is 2.5 gallons per acre per year (7.4 fl. oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. per year).

For Spot Control of Brush, Vines, and Weeds

  • Use hand-operated spray equipment such as backpack sprayers, pump-up sprayers or sprinkling cans, or ATV/Tractor mounted sprayers.
  • Mix 6 fl. oz. of this product per 1 gallon of spray solution. Thoroughly and uniformly spray the foliage of woody plants to wet.

For optimum performance:

  • Apply to actively growing brush, vines, and weeds.
  • Woody brush and vines are controlled better in late summer and fall after fruit formation.
  • If woody vines and brush are mowed or cut, wait until full leaf formation before treatment.
  • Do not cut or mow brush, vines, or perennial weeds for 2 months following treatment.
  • This product’s maximum application rate is 2.5 gallons per acre per year (7.4 fl. oz. per 1,000 sq. ft. per year).

How Long Does it Take for RM43 to Work?

One of the benefits of applying RM43 is its relatively fast action. Once absorbed, the formula quickly moves throughout the entire plant, and the growth of the target weed is suppressed soon after contact since plant protein synthesis is inhibited. RM43 is absorbed by both the roots and the foliage of plants and rapidly inhibits the growth of susceptible weeds.

Susceptible weed growth stops within 24 hours of treatment, even though visual symptoms may be slow to develop. Susceptible weeds usually show yellowing or browning within 2 to 3 weeks. Warm, moist conditions following the application will accelerate herbicidal activity instead of cold, dry conditions that will delay herbicidal activity. Per Bayer, weeds stressed by drought are less susceptible to this product.

Note: Heavy rainfall or irrigation within 2 hours after application may wash this product off the foliage, and a repeat application may be required for adequate control.

What Do the RM43 Total Vegetation Control Reviews Say?

Generally speaking, reviews of the RM43 Total Vegetation Control weed killer are on the positive side.

The majority of homeowners reported that it’ll target and kill any weeds that it comes in contact with. One thing that a lot of reviewers emphasized (and one that you should remember) is watering after the product dries on the plant so that the plant absorbs it well.

They mentioned that spraying alone without rain or irrigation will prolong the period you have to wait for its effect. Granted, most customers weren’t exactly thrilled by the price point of the RM43 herbicide. Still, then again, they were willing to pay for it since no other chemical can kill weed grasses and leave the harmless plants alone as efficiently as this product can.

Many reviews also mentioned that the performance of the Tenacity herbicide is superior to other methods such as Roundup and reseeding.

Can You Use RM43 Total Vegetation Control on Your Lawn?

No, you cannot use RM43 on your lawn or near desirable plants. The two main ingredients, Glyphosate and Imazapyr. are non-selective herbicides that work together to kill most leaves, grasses, and plants for “total vegetation control”.

What Weeds Will RM43 Total Vegetation Control Kill?

Is RM43 Total Vegetation Control Better than Roundup?

For most homeowners, gardeners, and turf managers, RM43 will have a similar short-term and better long-term affect on grassesa and weeds.

Similar to RM43, Roundup is a non-selective, systemic herbicide. This means it kills all types of plants it comes in contact with (except for plants that have been selectively bred to resist the herbicide). As a result, gardeners and landscapers who apply Roundup have to be careful not to get the herbicide on the harmless plants they want to keep. On the other hand, Tenacity herbicide works selectively. It kills weeds without harming grass and other desirable plants.
