How Does Certainty Herbicide Work?

Manufactured by Monsanto, Certainty Turf Herbicide’s active ingredient is Sulfosulfuron, from the sulfonylurea family of herbicides that can be used as a post-emergent form of control on invasive weeds. Sulfosulfuron was originally created to protect against stubborn weeds growing around crops.

certainty herbicide used on residential lawn
Certainty herbicide by Bayer is a selective weed killer that’s great for use on residential lawns.

Sulfosulfuron is both selective and systemic and can be readily absorbed through foliage and roots of the treated plant and can travel through the entire plant system. It interferes with the acetolactate synthase enzyme in targeted plants leading to essential amino acids being blocked from developing, which quickly slows cell division and total plant growth. Sulfosulfuron has some advantages over other herbicides because of its persistence when applied in the soil. It is also selective so you can apply it to treatment areas without fear of desired plants being affected by the active ingredient.

Sulfosulfuron is best used to treat annual and perennial grassy weeds and broadleaf weeds on residential or commercial turf sites. It is safe to use when applied according to label directions. The active ingredient presents a low hazard to the environment because it is used at low dilution rates and breaks down relatively quickly in most field situations and the environment.

You’ll want to use protective equipment before applying such as gloves, protective glasses, and long sleeve clothing. Refer to the product label for specific safety instructions. Some of the troublesome weeds Sulfosulfuron can treat included purple nutsedge, pigweed, and bindweed, among others.

Weed Killer Warning! Always read the manufacturer’s recommendations when choosing and applying any chemical herbicides to your lawn or landscape beds. Wear protective gloves and remember that some weed killer applications can kill flowers, grasses, and shrubs.

Is Certainty a Selective Herbicide?

Yes, Certainty is a selective herbicide. Selective means it doesn’t kill all lawn and grass types, as opposed to a non-selective herbicide that kills any plant it comes in contact with, including the grass you actually want to keep.

Is Certainty a Pre or Post-Emergent Herbicide?

Certainty is a post-emergence, systemic herbicide with limited soil residual activity. It provides postemergence control of many annual and perennial sedges, grass, and broadleaf weeds on highly managed turf, sod farms, and native grass sites. It is a selective herbicide that can be used over the top of many perennial warm-season and selected cool-season turfgrasses.

Per the Monsanto label, Certainty may be used for general weed control on highly managed turf and native grasses. It may be applied to residential and commercial turf sites, including apartment complexes, athletic fields, cemeteries, golf course fairways, golf course roughs, golf course tees, and other golf course areas, hotel properties, office complexes, parks, public turf areas, retail sites, storage facilities, school grounds, sod and turfgrass seed farms, and other highly managed turfgrass sites.

The product may be applied at recommended rates as a post-directed spray around any established warm-season ornamental grass or established woody ornamental species in landscaped areas. Avoid contact of this product with leaves of desirable plants as foliar injury, discoloration, or loss of the plant may result.

Who Manufactures Certainty Herbicide?

Certainty herbicide was originally manufactured by Monsanto and was recently acquired by Bayer. The Monsanto Company was an American agricultural biotechnology corporation founded in 1901. In 2018, it was acquired by Bayer as part of its crop science division. It was headquartered in Creve Coeur, Missouri. Monsanto is best known for developing Roundup, a glyphosate-based herbicide, in the 1970s, and became a major producer of genetically engineered crops.

Headquartered in Leverkusen, Bayer AG is a German multinational pharmaceutical and life sciences company and one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies. Bayer’s business areas include human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, consumer healthcare products, agricultural chemicals, seeds, and biotechnology products.

Why is Certainty Herbicide So Popular for Homeowners and Gardeners?

There are several reasons why the Certainty herbicide is widely used among homeowners, farmers, and gardeners.

certainty herbicide used on warm weather grasses to kill weeds
With a few exceptions, Certainty herbicide should be used on warm-weather grasses to kill weeds.

For starters, Certainty is a selective, systemic herbicide that’s capable of providing post-emergence control of grass and broadleaf weed in many warm-season turf species, such as riding your rough of bentgrass. Additionally, you can use Certainty on already-established or newly seeded turf.

The effects of applying Certainty herbicide also manifest relatively fast. Once absorbed, Certainty quickly travels throughout the whole plant, and the growth of the target weed is suppressed soon after contact by inhibiting essential amino acids necessary for growth.

Backpack sprayers, pump-up pressure sprayers, and other, similar types of hand-held sprayers may be used to apply this product. You’ll simply apply to foliage of vegetation to be controlled at a rate of 2 gallons of spray solution per 1000 square feet.

What is on the Certainty Herbicide Label?

Besides the product’s name, the first thing you’ll notice on the Certainty herbicide label is a bold ‘KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN’ caution. The label’s front side also includes information about the product’s ingredients, where Sulfosulfuron 75% is indicated as the active component.

The rest of the Certainty herbicide label contains crucial information regarding precautions and safety of use. There are first aid instructions on what to do if the product gets on your skin, in your eyes, if you inhale it, and if you swallow it.

The label also emphasizes that you carry the product container or label when calling a poison control center or doctor or going for treatment. There’s even a hotline number (1-(314) 694-4000.) for 24-hour medical emergency assistance or chemical emergency assistance. Moreover, the label includes information about the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) you need to wear when applying Certainty herbicide and some materials that are chemically resistant to this product.

Weed Killer Warning! Always read the manufacturer’s recommendations when choosing and applying any chemical herbicides to your lawn or landscape beds. Wear protective gloves and remember that some weed killer applications can kill flowers, grasses, and shrubs.

Is Certainty a Glyphosate Herbicide?

No, Certainty is not a glyphosate herbicide. Although both Certainty and glyphosate are broad-spectrum systemic herbicides, they differ in composition and mechanism of action.

On one side, Certainty features Sulfosulfuron, an active ingredient that is readily absorbed through foliage and roots of the treated plant and can travel through the entire plant system. It interferes with the acetolactate synthase enzyme in targeted plants leading to essential amino acids being blocked from developing, which quickly slows cell division and total plant growth.

On the other side, glyphosate is an organophosphorus herbicide that prevents the plant from making specific proteins that play a vital role in plant growth. Glyphosate disrupts the pathway of a particular enzyme in the shikimic acid pathway, which is essential for the life of plants and some microorganisms.

What are the Certainty Herbicide Instructions?

How Long Does Certainty Take to Kill Weeds?

One of the benefits of applying Certainty herbicide is its relatively fast action. Once absorbed, Certainty quickly moves throughout the entire plant, and the growth of the target weed is suppressed soon after contact since photosynthesis is stopped.

Certainty is absorbed by both the roots and the foliage of plants and rapidly inhibits the growth of susceptible weeds.

Susceptible weed growth stops within 24 hours of treatment, even though visual symptoms may be slow to develop. Susceptible weeds usually show yellowing or browning within 2 to 3 weeks. Warm, moist conditions following the application will accelerate herbicidal activity instead of cold, dry conditions that will delay herbicidal activity. Per Bayer, weeds stressed by drought are less susceptible to this product.

Note: Heavy rainfall or irrigation within 2 hours after application may wash this product off the foliage, and a repeat application may be required for adequate control.

What Do the Certainty Herbicide Reviews Say?

Generally speaking, reviews of the Certainty weed killer are on the positive side.

The majority of homeowners reported that Certainty targets and kills weeds while leaving the rest of the grass in the yard intact – reliably keeping the promise of its selective mode of action. One thing that a lot of reviewers emphasized (and one that you should remember) is watering after the product dries on the plant so that the plant takes it in.

They mentioned that spraying alone without rain or irrigation will prolong the period you have to wait for its effect. Granted, most customers weren’t exactly thrilled by the price point of the Certainty herbicide. Still, then again, they were willing to pay for it since no other chemical can kill weed grasses and leave the harmless plants alone as efficiently as this product can.

Many reviews also mentioned that the performance of the Tenacity herbicide is superior to other methods such as Roundup and reseeding.

Is Certainty Herbicide Better than Roundup?

For most homeowners, gardeners, and turf managers, Certainty is the better herbicide. There are a few motives for this, but the main reason can be summed up in one word: selectivity.

Unlike Certainty, Roundup is a non-selective, systemic herbicide. This means it kills all types of plants it comes in contact with (except for plants that have been selectively bred to resist the herbicide). As a result, gardeners and landscapers who apply Roundup have to be careful not to get the herbicide on the harmless plants they want to keep. On the other hand, Tenacity herbicide works selectively. It kills weeds without harming grass and other desirable plants.

Using Certainty, you won’t have to tread carefully when applying the treatment on your lawn.
