Types of Weed Eaters with Blade to Consider

Weed eaters are available in 3 types according to their power source:

  • Gas-powered: these models are equipped with powerful engines that meet federal regulations for 300 hours instead of the standard 50. With less pollution and higher durability, gas-powered weed eaters are widely popular among homeowners. However, they’re also more expensive.
  • Electric-powered: these models are lighter and less expensive, but they affect the environment and offer a limited range of use because of the cord.
  • Battery-powered: these are cordless trimmers powered by batteries that are suitable for smaller lawns.

Top Considerations When Choosing A Weed Eater with Blade

best brush cutter for high weeds

Our list today includes only gas-powered weed eaters as they’re the most efficient type, so let’s take a look at the most important features to consider when purchasing such a model:

  • Engine size and type: most weed eaters nowadays include either a 2-cycle or 4-cycle engine. Generally speaking, a 4-cycle motor is more powerful and more fuel-efficient, but 2-cycle engines are more common because they’re less costly, cause less fatigue due to reduced vibrations, and are relatively quieter.
  • Fuel capacity: since gas-powered weed eaters rely on gas as a power source, you need to keep fuel capacity in mind because it determines how long you can keep your unit running. Larger fuel tanks allow for longer trimming sessions, but they’re heavier to carry.
  • Cutting width: also known as cutting diameter, the cutting width gives you information about how much grass or weeds a weed eater can cut while in place.
  • Weight: the weight of your weed eater can significantly affect the level of fatigue it causes. Be sure to compare models based on their weights with a full fuel tank. This will provide insight on whether or not you’ll be able to use the unity at its heaviest possible weight.
  • Shaft length and type: weed eaters come with different shaft lengths and types, which directly affects both of their performances. A longer shaft makes it easier to trim without having to hunch over, while a curved shaft provides extra balance, and consequently, less fatigue over time.

Installing and Using a Weed Eater with Blade FAQs

Why use a weed eater with blade instead of string trimmer?

Blades on weed eaters mainly cut through very dense bushes and edging around stone or concrete. If the blades are configured vertically (as in edgers), you should use the unit to trimming right next to concrete to produce a narrow and precise cut. If the blades have a horizontal layout (as in brush cutters), you should use the unit to clear out larger areas.

How big of branches can you cut with a weed eater / brush cutter blade?

Unlike weed eaters or trimmers, a brush cutter can cut down branches and even small trees of up to 4 inches thick. If you wish to cut trees of a larger diameter are required, you should use a chainsaw instead of a brush cutter. While removing small trees, be sure to have a steady grip on the brush cutter until it’s made it all the way through the trunk to achieve and even cut.

How long will a brush cutter blade last?

Blades can be either metal or plastic, and their lifespan depends on your usage. As you can expect, metal blades are more durable than plastic ones, and accordingly, last longer. However, if you hit the blade against concrete or stone, a metal blade may chip while plastic may break altogether.  Still, metal blades can be sharpened, and as such, can last you a lifetime as opposed to a couple of weeks at best with the plastic version.

Can you use a brush cutter to cut grass?

Weed eaters are a great solution for tidying up long grass and managing weeds around your house. Brushcutters and weed eaters with blades, on the other hand, can tame thicker shrubbery and trim small saplings, making them a versatile option for professional users and homeowners.

How to Install a Blade on a Weed Eater?

Time needed: 30 minutes.

Adding a blade to your weed eater or brush cutter is super easy. Check out the steps below and begin cutting tough brush quickly.

  1. Place the weed eater on a flat surface.

  2. Disconnect the spark plug wire.

  3. Block the shaft to prevent it from operating by inserting a wooden rod into the hole behind the trimmer head.

  4. Unscrew the trimmer head by turning it clockwise. If you find a bolt holding it onto the drive shaft, turn the bolt clockwise with a socket wrench to remove it.

  5. Remove the deflector. If it’s screwed to the end of the shaft with Phillips screws or tightened with a collar, remove the screws or loosen the collar to separate the deflector.

  6. Replace the previous deflector with the one provided by the manufacturer intended for use with metal cutting blades. It should be attached to the shaft in the same manner as the one you took off.

  7. Put the blade on the thrust plate of the drive shaft, fit the thrust washer on top of it, then place the rider plate on top of that. (The rider plate looks like the trimmer head with a flat top that moves along the surface of the ground when you’re operating the unit)

  8. Tighten the shaft bolt counterclockwise with a socket wrench. After you’re done, remove the blocking rod to let the blade turn freely.
